It should come as no surprise that our power preference in the brawny Chrysler 300 sedan has been the equally brawny Hemi V-8. Sorting commuter traffic in a big sedan requires power, a commodity abundant in Chrysler’s Hemis and scarce in the first-gen 300’s V-6s.
But six-cylinder thrift became a lot more desirable with the model’s comprehensive 2011 overhaul, which included an upgrade to a more powerful, 3.6-liter engine. The 3.6 makes 292 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque, 42 more ponies and 10 more lb-ft than were produced by the old car’s 3.5-liter V-6. (The first 300 was also offered with a woefully inadequate 178-horse 2.7-liter.) Now 2012 brings the addition of a new ZF eight-speed automatic in place of the previous five-speed for Limited and S V-6 models (the five-cogger carries over in base 300s for now).

The large luxury SUV is six times more likely to be plucked away by thieves than average. Fiat is bringing a Gucci version of its Fiat 500 micro-car to the United States this year.
The new black-and-white Fiat 500 and 500c convertible by Gucci were customized by Gucci creative director Frida Giannini and Fiat’s styling studio.
The car features Gucci’s signature green-and-red stripe along the side of the car, as well as on the seat belt and seats. The car also will have premium leather seats and other leather accents.
“With Gucci as our design partner, we’ve amplified the Italian style of our Fiat 500 with unique exterior and interior looks that will make the car truly unique on the road,” Laura Soave, head of the Fiat brand in North America said in a statement.
Fiat will show the models for the first time in the U.S. in New York on Sept. 8 during Fashion Week.
The 2012 Fiat 500 by Gucci models will be available in December. Fiat declined to reveal the price. The base model of the regular Fiat 500 and Fiat 500 convertibles start at $15,500 and $19,500.
Fiat has sold 7,982 Fiat 500s in the United States since the car went on sale in March. Fiat, now the majority owner of Chrysler, now has about 100 U.S. dealers.

It’s spring, and what could be more pleasant than putting the top down in a stylish European four-seat convertible?
We got the chance to drive the 2011 Volvo C70 recently, rediscovering the joys (and smells) of open-air travel in the spring sunshine.
The C70 is a bit of an oddball in the Volvo lineup, which is otherwise largely composed of sensible sedans and capacious crossovers.
It’s what the Europeans call a coupe-convertible, with a metal roof that folds into the trunk within 30 seconds when you want it to become a droptop.
It’s a remarkable process to watch, as a collection of electric motors and hydraulic rams disengages the top from various latches, then lift it, separate it into three short sections that nest neatly into each other, and drop the whole thing into the trunk–whose lid has opened from the rear on a special second set of hinges.
The C70 competes with the Volkswagen Eos (and used to match up with the old Audi A4 Cabrio), but it sits a notch below convertibles from more prestigious nameplates, including the current Audi A5 Cabrio, Lexus IS-C, and Infiniti G35 cabriolet.
The base price of the 2011 Volvo C70 is $39,950. Our test car listed at $46,550, including a $2,600 multimedia package, $1,900 for a dynamic package plus a climate package, $700 for Volvo’s exemplary Blindspot Information System, and $550 for metallic paint.
Striking, sporty … and very, very red.
The front end of the C70 was restyled last year, updating the corporate car grille and vent placement to resemble the stylish and successful XC60 crossover. The lamps are swept back into the fenders, and it gives this car–now several years old–an entirely new look.
The truly striking deep cherry-red metallic paint combined with five-spoke wheels and low-profile tires to erase any traces of stodginess, making the C70 look far sportier than it used to. And the car attracted looks aplenty.
There are a few quibbles: Unusually for safety-minded Volvo, the deep seats and rising beltline make the rear visibility marginal and reversing a challenge, even for a six-foot-tall driver.
Inside, the C70 cockpit is a bit severe, with lots of hard black plastic–more so than the more recent XC60, with its warmer cream and beige interior.

The Touring and Heritage models both use a 3.5L V8 that demonstrates up to 250 horsepower. The 300C is where Chrysler really turns up the heat. The 300C employs a 5.7 liter HEMI V8 which can punch out up to 340 HP on a 5-speed automatic transmission.
